Types of Therapy

Realistically, therapy is often a blend of all the types of therapy below and more.  Choose the one that seems right for you to help me understand your needs.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Ask any of my clients, and they will tell you that mindfulness practice is common in our sessions. It may feel a bit awkward at first, but people tell me how helpful practicing being in the present moment can be.

MBCT is a therapy approach that combines traditional cognitive therapy techniques with mindfulness practices. This therapy helps individuals recognize and change negative thought patterns while cultivating present-moment awareness.

As we’re working together, I may say to you, “Where do you feel this (emotion) in your body?” to increase your awareness and mind-body connection. This therapy also helps us learn about our adaptations developed through our childhood experiences.

By learning to observe thoughts and feelings without judgment, clients develop greater emotional resilience. MBCT empowers clients to create a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Years have taught me that the most powerful answers are within the people I serve.

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a brief, goal-oriented therapeutic approach that emphasizes finding solutions in the present and exploring hope for the future rather than focusing extensively on past problems. This therapy is grounded in the belief that clients have the capacity to lead their own change and that they possess the strengths and resources needed to achieve their goals.

SFT is a time-limited, strengths-based, and collaborative approach.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

I completed EMDR training in 2012 with the intention to work more intensively with my clients. I became curious about situations in which emotional responses were disproportionately large to clients’ circumstances. Clients would say, “I don’t know why I’m so upset about this,” or “I wish I didn’t react so strongly.”

Thankfully, I discovered EMDR, a powerful therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and transform traumatic and overwhelming experiences.

By using bilateral movements, clients are encouraged to strengthen positive inner resources and reprocess distressing memories that contribute to limiting thoughts of the present. When we reprocess memories, we reduce their emotional charge and integrate our experiences into healthier thoughts and core beliefs. And with our healthier thoughts, our reactions are more aligned with how we want to be.

EMDR has been shown to be effective for trauma, anxiety, and various other mental health challenges.

Internal Family Systems Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic model that views the mind as made up of different "parts" or subpersonalities, each with its own perspectives, emotions, and roles. By identifying and engaging these parts, clients can better understand their internal conflicts and heal from past wounds.

I like to blend IFS with EMDR therapy, especially for people with childhood relational trauma. IFS promotes self-compassion and integration, allowing individuals to create a harmonious internal system and improve emotional well-being. This therapy is particularly effective for trauma, anxiety, and relationship issues.

Spiritual Counseling

One of my highest values is to respect the differences of others. That includes your unique spiritual development.

Spiritual counseling is a supportive and inclusive approach that encourages individuals to explore their personal beliefs and values, regardless of their spiritual or religious background. It provides a safe space for clients to reflect on their life experiences, enhance self-awareness, and seek meaning and purpose.

Through compassionate dialogue and active listening, I can help you navigate challenges, connect with your inner self, and foster a sense of peace and fulfillment. This holistic practice respects and honors diverse perspectives, empowering clients to cultivate their unique spiritual paths and enhance their overall well-being.

Imago Relationship Therapy

It’s not what you say but how you say it!

Imago Relationship Therapy focuses on transforming conflict in romantic relationships into opportunities for healing and growth. By understanding the unconscious patterns that drive behaviors and reactions, couples can learn to communicate effectively and nurture deeper connections.

This approach emphasizes empathy, active listening, and the importance of recognizing each partner's needs, ultimately fostering a more loving and supportive relationship. I provide Imago in couples therapy and through Imago Couples Workshops.

I also utilize other couples’ therapy approaches, including Gottman Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples.

Discernment Counseling

Discernment Counseling is a specialized therapeutic approach designed for couples who are at a crossroads in their relationship, particularly those contemplating divorce or separation but unsure about their decision. This method provides a structured and supportive environment where both partners can explore their individual concerns, feelings, and hopes regarding the relationship.

The primary goal of Discernment Counseling is to help couples gain clarity about their options—whether to pursue reconciliation, take time apart, or proceed with divorce. Unlike traditional couples therapy, which focuses on improving the relationship, Discernment Counseling emphasizes understanding each partner's perspective and the underlying issues that have led to the current situation.
